WE ARE THE CHILDREN
WE ARE THE CHILDREN, an exhibition by The Ministry of Preschool Education of Uzbekistan in partnership with UNESCO, illustrates the powerful and transformative role of education for pre-primary children. 9 photo-stories were produced by TIMKAT around the world to showcase innovative practices for Early Childhood Care and Education. The exhibition was on display at the World Conference on Early Childhood Care and Education, held in Tashkent, 14-17 November 2022.
- Thailand: Each morning, over 20 pre-schoolers between 2 and 4 years old are dropped off by their parents at the Makkasan Child Development Centre in Bangkok’s Ratchathewi district. Inside the classroom, three teachers guide the children through games, songs, dance, puzzles and many more fun-filled activities. Photos by Jack Taylor.
- Morocco: In 2018, the Moroccan government launched a nationwide preschool programme aimed at children aged 4-6. Photographer Mehdy Marouch visited Zoulika Ennassiri school in Casablanca.
- Ecuador: Santiago Serrano spent time with Tin, a 5-year-old boy with Down’s syndrome, at kindergarten during his karate classes and family-life at their home near Quito.
- Cambodia: Nestling amid rubber and cashew plantations in the mountains of Ratanakiri In the north-east of Cambodia, Kok Ampel’s pre-school offers bilingual education to Kreung indigenous children aged 3 to 6 years old. Photographer Erika Piñeros attended the classes.
- Uganda: Can’t Wait to Learn is an education programme initiated by NGO WARCHILD HOLLAND. It offers children the opportunity to pursue their learning on tablet devices playing educational games. Martin Khawurma was our photographer at Rubondo Primary School, Nakivale Settlement camp.
- Brazil: Tuane Fernandes visited nurseries and pre-schools in the Atibaia municipality, Sao Paulo State, Brazil, where children aged 0-5 have access to early education thanks to a national programme to expand nurseries and kindergartens. The day of the photo shoot happened to be “Crazy Hair Day”, part of the country’s national Children’s Month.
- Cook Islands: Melanie Cooper’s photo story focuses on the preschool activities of children living on Raratonga, the largest of the Cook Islands in the Pacific, halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand.
- Canada: In Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada, at the Tasiuqtigiit Hand-in-Hand Preschool provides early childhood education focusing on Inuit culture in both the English and Inuktitut languages. Photos by Lisa Milosavljevic.
- Burkina Faso: In the Saaba district of Ouagadougou Mariam lovingly raises her three children, including one-year-old Attiou, with a deep desire to offer them a better world. Photos by Sophie Garcia.
